to lookup an email address, you can "finger"

basically comes back with the persons name etc etc usually.

you can do it in 9x/nt, but firewall is blocking, so want to find a place on the web that does it

Finger is a method of finding info about a user account, not necessarily just on UNIX systems. Usually uses port 79. Is insecure as hell. Got nothing to do with email.

Better way to test if an address exists is to 'vrfy' the address itself on the domains SMTP server (which is what vrfy(1) that comes with elm(1) does), but rightly so most SMTP servers don't allow it.

Steve.
