Default Thoughts on this TV?

I'm moving house soon, so think I need a new TV to go with the purchase

I don't think I really need 4K yet, as I wouldn't get any use out of it, as it would be used for Sky HD, PS4 and a Firestick - so not really pushing the boundaries.

I've found this at what looks like a decent TV for the price?

http://markselectrical.co.uk/55EC930...elevision.html

Thought curved might be ok, as I will be directly in front of it, approx 5.5 meters away. I always think curved look great in the shops too.

Cheers

We went out looking to buy a curved screen TV, most of the specialist shops / sales persons talked us out of it as it being a bit of a gimmick...

We ended up with a 52" flat screen 4k TV which is superb and a few hundred cheaper.

Go to a shop where you can see the same TV curved and flat side by side. that was the clincher for us...

Curved TV's are a bit of a gimmick, they are ok for gaming monitors where your sat close as they wrap around your peripheral vision to match the shape of your eyeballs. At normal TV viewing distances they can't wrap around your eyeball shape to give you a good peripheral view, the TV would need to be massive to curve around your peripheral view to have any benefit and even that would be minimal. Personally i don't like them, they don't look natural.

Like someone said, AV forums is a good starting point, post what you need the TV for and you will get some good advice.

Cheers guys, I had a look on AV forums, and the TV does get good reviews.

Littleted, is the 960V worth the £1000 more than the 930V? Just in all honesty, I won't make use of the 4k.....but think OLED is the way forward at the moment.

920v is a better buy than the 960 as supports HDR over HDMI. I have been toying with getting a 920 or 950 for a while now and kinda hoping they would drop to £1800. Some have managed sub £2k with discount vouchers and cashback.

AV Forums is useful but you will come away thinking every TV has major issues. People go looking for faults rather than just enjoy things. The OLEDs do struggle with near black contents - you can clearly see that on the Ed Sheeran demo most are running.

As regards to 4K it depends how long you expect to keep it. I personally think its a no brainer. You also want HDR support and you now have the Dolby and THX versions.

Bear in mind LG are about to release their 2016 OLEDs as well. Might drop the prices of the older sets but who knows.

Hi P1Fanatic,

Yes, there does seem a lot of negativity on AV Forums about every TV, haha.

I would be keeping this TV for a good number of years. I know I should future proof by getting 4K, but I still don't know if I would make use of it. Sky HD isn't really full HD yet, let alone any 4K?

I was only wanting to spend ~£1000 on a TV, and the EC930V is already pushing that up slightly. I don't think I can justify around £2000 on a TV really.

Do you think curved TVs are decent? I was looking at the OLED route, of which most seem to be curved.

Any other recommendations?

Cheers

Amazon prime and Netflix are doing 4k content. And of course BT but I have yet to see the latter in the flesh. 4K blu ray players have only just come out and films will be limited so you make a good point. But if you already watch blu rays then bear in mind these will be upscaled.

The 950 is the only flat oled I know of and was Currys only exclusive. Not sure if thats still the case. I have not made my mind up about curve - I watch a fair bit of football and I am not sure about the curve bending the side lines etc. I need to go a do a proper demo and watch some regular sky sports hd rather than a demo on a usb stick. But Ideally I wanted to do 920 v 950 side by side. With the announcement of the 2016 models I may just hold fire.

Not looked at other options as OLED to me looks so sharp and perfect blacks. And at the moment that means you are limited to LG really.

The 960 is the first 4K OLED but has been out a while now. The 920 came out later last year. 960 has a nicer stand and HK built in sound but doesnt support HDR (either streaming or via HDMI). If you listen to the critics HDR is a bigger evolutionary step than from Full HD to 4K. Whether thats marketing bull who knows but I would hate to buy without and be on the wrong side.

If you can live without 4K then the 930 might be the better buy until everything is finalised between HDR formats. Problem is there will always be something around the corner whenever you buy. I will wait and see what price the 2016 OLEDs start at. I dont want to spend more than £2k as you lose crazy money on TVs l.

So is the 55eg910v actually newer than the 55ec930v I'm looking at?

As you can seem to get that for around the same price from some shops.

Not read up much on these two other than yes the 910 is newer. A quick google suggests one less HDMI and no USB playback on the 910 but no idea on the accuracy of that info.
