Noisy fan

Hi Guys,
the fan on my PC has started making a really annoying buzzing/grinding noise. It used to only do it when I started it up when it was a bit parky here in the cupboard under the stairs but now its doing it all the time.
Any ideas? A good spray of WD40 perhaps?

Look at the RPM my mates XP amd had 7200rom fan

Probably easier just to swap the fan - there is a huge amount available for £10-15

have a look at the fan and clean out any dirt/dust. if you a can of compressed air, give it a good blow.

Bear in mind it could be the power supply fan (most spensive as you'll need a new PSU), processor fan, additional case fan (if you have any) or the fan on your graphics card if you have something meaty in there like a GEForce. Hopefully it's the CPU fan as these are quite easy to replace with a little common sense. Either way the link above should be able to sort it out if you can determine which one is the problem.

One thing you may want to consider when you get it sorted out, is to reduce the volts to the fan making it run slower. The upside is the noise is less, the downside is the amount of air it is moving is reduced. You need to decide if you are happy with this. The cheap and easy way to do this is to run the fan off 7V, which you can easily obtain by using the 12V and 5V lines from the PSU. Take a look at http://www.7volts.com/ for further details.
