Help needed in copying DVD's

Can anyone help me with this?
I have just bought an HP external DVD writer, and would appreciate any help in using it to copy DVD films. I have been messing about with the thing using DVD Decrypter (downloaded off the internet) for a coulple of days so far with no luck.
Can anyone help me out? Ideally I would like to copy direct from my DVD ROM drive (In my laptop) onto the new external drive. Can anyone tell me how to do this simply?
