wax you put on the car and the polish is the people that put the wax on the car

Polish cleans / prepares / removes blemishes from your paintwork.
Wax then provides a durable overcoat to protect all your hard work when you polished.
Depending on the colour of your car, you may find sealants provide better results than waxes...particularly true of lighter coloured cars. Bob

Polishes normally contain a "cutting" element which removes, swirls, scratches etc (not Autoglym Super Resin Polish, it "fills" the swirls hiding them )

Waxes, as posted, protect the newly cleaned surface.....

Glazes/Sealants can act as a paint "cleaner" and also contain protection

Some waxes may give a duller finish on darker cars, whilst sealants may give a wetter/brighter finish...flip side being waxes remain protective for longer (normally)

Depends on the product and application TBH.......a well prepped car using off the shelf reasonably priced products, properly applied will ALWAYS look better than a poorly prepped car using expensive named products IMHO
