autosol and a wire wool sponge u get for doing pots and pans, gets the really ingrained black soot off, used this on my scoobysport back box on my first subaru which looked like the owner hadnt cleaned ever! came up as new. used it everytime i washed the car after and kept its shine for years.

the best thing i have done to it, is use wonder wheels (car wheel cleaner) off the top of my head car care makes it. wee tiny bit in a cup, brush on and wash the exhaust, pracitally cleans itself. honestly cant recommend it enough. my exhaust back box is 3 years old (i bought second hand, so maybe older than that) and it looks like new!

If you want something doing right, do it right first time - This is a tried and tested method, by me.

Buy some 'fine' wire wool
A tube of Autosol
Meguiars NXT metal polish
Microfibre cloths/applicator pads

Firstly, apply some autosol on to the exhaust and pull some wire wool from the pack and work the cream into the exhaust. Then wipe away. If you feel another session would work better then do so. Then using an applicator pad (megs in this case) wipe some megs NXT metal polish onto the exhaust, leave for a minuted or two then wipe away with a microfibre cloth. Stand back and admire your handy work. If you have a really dirty exhaust I would suggest using some disposable gloves or working gloves.
