once you eventually get the tar and sh!t3 off use poor boys wheel sealant to give it some protection, will make it all the easier to clean next time, just started using this stuff myself and find it to be excellent

Any of the products already mentioned should work.
Autoglym tar remover is good and likely cheapest, just use with a e.g. rag.
Autosmart tardis is good stuff, but I've really on seen it come in large quantity (not to say can't get in smaller amounts) so may sway your buying decision if you don't plan on using it elsewhere in the future. Use on a rag or spray it on which is easy use particularly for the inner wheel area if you are leaving them on (spray, leave for a bit and just wash your wheels).
Claying is fine but might want to take the wheels off for it.
As said make sure you protect your wheels, more than one coat!, after all that and it'll stop the tar spots coming back any time soon, plus makes cleaning them normally that bit easier.

Yeah I got some white rims as well, good to read this, going to invest also.
Be great if it works well and easier to clean, doing my head in keep cleaning them, only had them a couple of months. (also girlfriend doesn't like me doing it, thinks I do to much to my car) (don't think so)

Some like myself........
Some go the extra mile & remove the wheel & clean inside & out
What I notice now is that it is so much easier to jetty the dirt off.
I also use the wheelback brush from PB which has been a cheap but very effective way to keep the inner wheel parts clean.
My jack only allowed me to remove the one wheel at a time so was a bit time consuming but worth dong imo. Think its approx 25 mins between coats.

Another vote for Tardis, then I always give the wheels a coat of Jeffs Prime Strong followed by a few coats of Poorboys Wheel Sealant and to finish off give the tyres a going over with Blackfire long lasting tyre gel.Job done!
