Default to clay bar or not to clay bar...

excuse my ignorance as i'm new to this, but what does the clay bar do.....

does it smooth the paint out and add the clay product to any pits and blemishes on the surface ??

is it something a begginer could do ??

Thanks
Chris.

I did mine last week using McGuires products (clay bar and detail spray)
It took around 1hr to do the whole car and afterwards the car surface was like glass (I then had to do the wife's Mini when I showed her my car)
Well worth doing and very simple.

Its very good at removing bonded contaimnants without being overtly abrasive..

However if the contamination is badly affected, it may not remove it that well; in which case combining a clay bar with more potent chemicle cleaner, like glue and tar remover as a lubricant is quite effective. (happens quite a lot round here with cars kept outside due to industrial fall-out)

The ultimate goal here is to get the paintwork clean. So it feels as smooth as glass, before using any polishes to correct surface scratches and applying any waxes.
