Thinking about getting a Porter cable
Having looked loads at the threads on this section I'm considering getting a Porter cable, but was wondering for those that have them where did you import from and how much did it cost including tax if any ?
Also I need info on what backing pads to get and which ones are used for what, I have a MY93 WRX in red it has light swirl marks on it I would like to be able to get rid of those then give it a wet look shine so product info to do this would be helpful to
Si

this is something i have been meaning to buy for ages but never got around to it, TBH i am very wary of letting the numptys who work for me loose with it, which is one of the reasons why i still have not ordered one.
will get around to getting one sometime, maybe the summer

Best place to buy is Autopia (www.autopia-carcare.com), as the price is good, the service excellent and you don't pay duty. If you sign up on detailing world and ask, you will also get a discount code worth 10-15 %. The SFX pad kits that Autopia sell are okay and very good value, bit I personally prefer Lake Country pads, hence why I stock them in the store. However, for occasional use the SFX pad kit is fine. To sort out swirls on Impreza paint you will need a good quality polish with a high degree of cut - Menzerna Intensive Polish is highly recommended.
PS - I have no affiliation with Autopia whatsoever, they just offer the best deal I've come across. I've ordered several units from them over the last 12 months, each time hassle free.

lol cheeky you should see the inside if you think the out is bad, get used as a farm car as well as the wife has horses.
Anymore info on glazes / waxes I was going to go for :
Poorboy's Super Slick & Suds Car Wash
Clearkote Red Moose Machine Glaze
Clearkote Moose Wax
But the last one sold out !!!
Would I need anything else to put on after the Menzerna Intensive Polish, if I used that to remove the swirls ?

Aye, the Intensive Polish only corrects the paint, so you will still need to add a glaze (optional) and protection (a must!). The Moose Wax is not what you want - you need the Carnuba Moose Wax after the Red Moose Glaze, and we still have a few of these left. For an example of this very combo, check out the thread - Polished Bliss vs BMW330Ci and Leon Cupra R eslewhere in this section - it's what I used on the red LCR.

Got one coming this week from autopia - will let you know about tax/duty when it arrives.
Bliss, is it alright to use autoglym paint renovator with a sfx-1 pad or would you recommend getting some new stuff?

Well, I got myself a PC back in Jan. This weekend was the first time I got to use it.
Must say, it made easy work on polishing and applying the FMJ. Having never used a polisher before I found it very easy to use, the adjustable speed meant i could start of at a low RPM and as my confidence increased, increase the RPM to speed up the process.
If you are going to buy one I would reccomend buying the lead cover as well as when working on the roof or bonnet the lead drags across the car, potential for scratches. As I didn't buy one of these I ended up using one of the wifes old pair of tights, lol
Removed all the swirls and minor scratches from the clear coat with ease.
The only problem now is that the car is that clean and shiney that all the dings from stone chips and Tesco's car park stand out a mile............

The best pads are the sfx ones, the DAS ones are better if you are novice as they have a little more give. They are both better choices than Lake Country ones though in my opinion.

Disagree on this one - I started out using SFX/DAS pads for six months or so, then switched to Lake Country pads, as in my opinion they give better results, are easy to use and last longer. If you are buying from Autopia it makes sense money-wise to buy a kit, as it's way cheaper than buying the accessories over here, and the SFX/DAS kits are fine for novices. However, if you want to get into detailing more cars more often, the Lake Country pads are the way to go.
