It's been a while since I was on SN.

How do I search a forum ? I can see how to search the whole web (useless) and search the whole of SN but it hardly narrows things down.

There's over 10 pages of results on this :

You should be able to find what you're looking for using the scoobynet google search, but if you can't there are subscriptions available as low as £2 which enable you to search the forums using the advanced search.
