Deerhunter,

I found what I was looking for....

I was right in the slant intercooler is the early cars, so if you have a straight mounter top mount I believe it will bolt straight in.. <I believed wrong, it won't fit straight in, see below>

Extracts from the thread I was looking for: Thread

Rich Wild asked:
It appears that you have the early bonnet like me so would I presume have had the slanty intercooler to start with. How did you fit the bigger straight intercooler on as I looked at doing this myself and it didn't appear to fit?

Cossie Covert replied:
Rich - The STi I/C is a VERY tight fit. I removed 5 mm from each of the hose end fittings on the I/C and throttle body. I also had to move the servo pipe (seen dangling above I/C) and 'reprofile ' the rear engine mount bracket. It now clears the bulkhead by a few mm ! Good job it has stiff engine mounts.

Sorry, I don't want to burst the bubble with the P1 intercooler but it will not fit a MY97 UK Turbo because the dump valve for this intercooler (IIRC) is on the front right of the intercooler and it will contact with the Idle sensor which is right beside the old exit port on the old intercooler. Unless you get a bolt on peice that is shaped like the MY97 exit port (IIRC MRT may do them) I feel that it is a no go!

Sorry!

It's do-able. Jacko who posts on here has put an STI 5/6 top mount intercooler to his MY97 car.

Homer,
You are correct. He used a reputable company in Essex to Fabricate a replacement part to fit on the exit for the P1 intercooler which was shaped like the exit port on a MY97 - so it is doable. Just need to find the right people to fabricate this up and you are cookin with gas!

Let me know how you get on because this is a route I would like to follow as £750 for a Uprated intercooler that is only 85 more efficeint than a P1 intercooler is just throwing money away!

Good luck. Keep us posted!

Thumbs up

For some time now my old username JACKO was murdered. However I have been resurrected as DJNormski!

First of all, it is doable! Although it isn't easy and you are reliant upon the fabrication firm you use to how well it goes.
As has already has been covered, the idle speed control gets in the way so P1/STi5/6 BOV no good!
I used Haywood and Scott to make me up a BOV adapter but the problems begin with the actual intercooler. The outlet to the P1 BOV is smack bang inline with the idle speed control (and no, you cannot move that ), so an overlapping hole has to be cut into the intercooler and its gasket (a bit like a 8 shape) taking care not to infringe upon the 2 bolt holes and sealing surface.

Mine still requires a bit of finessing as it is a bit tight to get over the intercooler support bracket. I will go and see my contact within H & S tomorrow to discuss my tweaking and mention that we may need to make another if you are interested???

Did I also read correct that someone claims that the STi intercooler is not as good as some aftermarket ones???? Poor research if you ask me, as I have already gone through that loop and any of the STi items are among the best in the business excluding FMIC of course

Jacko.

if i can get this adapter i cant see it not fitting! there is enough room i just wont be able to fit the BOV directly to the intercooler (as you say there isnt enough room) and will have to stick with the std one that i have! ???

Hi m8, you have/had the same TMIC as me! If you want, I will ask Haywood and Scott to try a fabricate another one based upon mine. If they agree, I will give you the contact and you can talk money to them.
The best thing to do is leave the STi intercooler with them so they can cutout the 8 shape from both TMIC and gasket.
The BOV adapter can be fabricated prior.
I need to go and see H & S 2day and discuss my final tweaks!!!

Any info on TMIC efficiency comparisons, i.e. STi Vs BPM?????????

Jacko.

The 8 shape is required due to the bore size of the tube you must use. You cannot get a tight enough bend so as to not clash/rub against the idle speed. H & S tried many ways of fudging it around but this was the only solution.
Efficiency gains were far better Vs OEM 97MY TMIC according to Bob Rawle when he re-mapped it again.
I need to pop back and see Bob soon as I have other mods afoot trying to improve spool up/boost response......never happy
