Unhappy

Hi can anybody tell me why when car is in reverse and I dip the clutch ie: free wheeling backwards, car makes very loud whineing noise - only started happening recently, after loosing my temper and shooting backwards rather fast, when I met some stupid git who wouldn't reverse into a layby less than 10ft behind him, myself having to go back about 100ft - so built up quite a bit of speed in my temper !
Has reversing at speed damaged cogs or clutch ? or worse, all comments greatly received.

Damn that man if this is gonna cost me, I should have switched my engine off and just sat there !! - fumeing !

Cheers in advance

Mine makes a real loud whine when reversing, and they all do it, but I have not checked to see if it does it with the clutch in.

Cheers,

Wrexy.

Its prob the diff or some gear or other thats designed to be quiet in the FORWARD direction. Since you're going in reverse, its louder than usual!

Helical and spiral bevel(as in differentials) are "handed" and have prefered direction, they will invariably be noisier reversed. This may be emphasised by the reversed loadings increasing the tooth to tooth clearance or axial position of the mating gears, although the tooth form (usually modified involute) can tolerate some error.
Did you understand all that? Sounded good though! (It's true!)

steve....what have you done to it now mate

reverse gear cogs are straight cut, hence the noise. if you here some rally cars with a full straight cut box, you'll know about it

cheers, ian.
