Default Oil temp problems ?

Hi all I have a 1999 turbo 2000
It has an aftermarket oil cooler, Now my issue is I have a oil temp gauge in the car that reads in Fahrenheit max reading is 300f...
On a run it will sit at 180/90 but when sat in traffic it will nearly hit 300?
That's about 147d...? That cant be right can it ...?

Doesn't sound right that. Get around 80c (126f) pottering about rising to around 90c-100c when giving it some beans (190f-212f). No cooler on mine so would have thought yours would be lower with a cooler.

why do you need an oil cooler? no necessary on a turbo 2000 unless modified.
oil shouldnt get hot like that on idle anyway

Do you trust the accuracy of the gauge/sender?

Where is the sender located? Temp. readings will vary quite a lot depending where the sender is. After re-locating the sender from the sump to the oil pump the general running temp. went from 85c to 100c on my STi

Tubbytommy - It was on there when i brought the car ...

JohnD - its located on the side of the sump .

Blue by you - The gauge looks quite old ...so i dont trust the sender/gauge

Paul98typer - Thats my thoughts exactly.

As stated above theres no running problems with the car BUT if there was a problem with oil temp being that high what would be the cause and would the car over heat ...?

If your oil genuinely reached 147C as you are suggesting, I don't think you would be on here asking if it was a problem. You would already be looking at a rebuild.

^^^^ this, the oil would be useless at that temp and the engine would be knocking like a jehovah's witness

sounds like its reading wrong then mate, gauge or sender is def duff, as said 147 is more than enough to cook the engine.
