Default 1st gear crunching

Right this might be a bit of a noob question. I'm on my first Scooby and first jap car. When selecting first gear it crunches slightly if the car is still rolling forward. I have to bring the car to a full stop before selecting first. Also struggle to get it into reverse sometimes. A small part of me is thinking/hoping that this maybe being.caused by the clutch?? Or is it just a case of a worn gearbox and syncros that have been ragged too much. The car has done 98000 miles so it wouldn't surprise me. My mates reckon that it crunches in first because its a jap car and that its a bit more high performance than the German cars I've been driving up to now tho I think this is crap. Any help would be appreciated

Sound like how my box was before it jammed up, I was struggling to get it in reverse and it kept popped out of 5th ,I'd say prepare for a new gearbox

I'd say try changing the gearbox oil first
Has it has a new clutch?

As far as I'm aware it's on it's original clutch and gearbox. I have checked the gearbox oil and it doesn't seem too thin although I think I will change it. Ill have to consult my service book. Do you reckon it could be worn gear linkages?

Going by it being first or reverse I'd wager clutch tbh. Sounds like it is dragging slightly.

Top tip...don't try and engage first gear when moving..every Scoob I have owned hates being treated like this.
Just sold a WRX and that did it for 4 years, no clutch drag, just didn't like it.
My new STi Spec D also does it, but I have learnt not to do it, as it will **** the first gear syncros, eventually.

Some cars love it, Subaru's I think love the crunch!

If it is still rolling try 2nd gear...
