Default Clink on brake application

Last winter I had my MY99 classic Sti calipers (4-pot Subaru-embossed) exchanged for similar reconditioned calipers.

Ever since the front brakes have made a 'clink' sound when the brakes are applied, as if the pads are backing off too much and there is some free-play before the pots apply pressure to the disc. It appears to be getting worse so thinking it needs attention. It has no effect on the operation or effectiveness of the brakes, its just the noise issue. If I apply brakes then release and then reapply immediately there is no 'clink' but if I wait say 10 seconds and apply again, the clink is present again.

The calipers were supplied with new discs, pads and completely new hardware, pad bolts and the springy clips (still no idea what these do). The shims supplied with the new pads weren't fitted as I re-used the slatted originals.

Any thoughts appreciated. Have checked caliper bolts and these remain tight.

Sounds like pad slip to me.(Nothing to worry about) Usually happens when you go backwards or forwards for the first time. But usually only does it the once, untill you go in the other direction again.

I get that, quite annoying tbh especially when doing a three point turn - but it's a non issue once moving.

Ian @ Godspeed recommended that I bend the clip thingy which goes between the two pins in the Brembo's and the pads to try and force it to keep more grip on the pads - but didn't bother to try it yet.

I had this problem and it was fixed in couple of minutes.

Turns out the retaining clips were upside down and causing the pad to move when applying the brake.

Make sure the bit that sticks out is at the top. Check online for photos!!

Haha okay so this is far more common than I thought! As I say no effect on brake function but every new passenger gives me the "what's that clink every time you brake" line.
The old ones didn't do it so wonder if the new springy clips need a bit of a bend. Will explore this tomorrow. Brian Downie used to look after my car and he thought the problem might lessen if I stop cleaning the new calipers to within an inch of their life and allow a bit of brake dust to accumulate...but this doesn't look very pretty!

Cheers for the feedback all

You're dead right Dave, mine are fitted with the curved bit facing down. This should be at the top as in the picture right? Even at 20:57 on a Sunday night I'm itching to go out and change this round to see if it resolves the issue...
