Default 6 Speed Diff Ratios for Rallying

Can anyone help?

I have an Impreza Classic Wagon that I use for Stage Rallying. It has a 5-Speed gearbox with 4.4 Diffs but I blew it up at the weekend on the Somerset Stages!!

I am sure that I need to fit a 6 speed gearbox but want to know if I can use the diffs from my 5 speed to get the correct gearing. Are they interchangeable??

I have been offered a 6 speed gearbox conversion kit for £1,450 but as the box has done 85,000 miles I am not sure that it would be up to the job.

Any advice on how to get a 6 speed gearbox into the car without it costing me a fortune would be appreciated!

Just a thought - Does the Forester have a six speed gearbox & are the ratios lower? If so, wouldn't this be ideal?? Help needed please!

6 speeds only come with 3.9 front crown wheel and pinions ,there are two different sets of drop gears a 1:1 and a 1.1:1 the 1:1 runs a 3.9 rear crownwheel and pinion and the 1.1:1 runs a 3.54 rear, and the parts from a 5 speed do not fit a 6 speed,BUT! you can get a 4.4 front crown wheel and pinion for a 6 speed ,it is not a standard item but is an homologation STI special ,so where do you get one? japanparts.com BTW I use one that I got from America a few years ago .I can also e-mail you the gearing graph with the closer ratio JDM gearing 4.4 cwp on 18" Pirelli tarmac tyres .

depending on exactly what your doing the JDM box is pretty handy ratio wise.................

the Forester box actually has longer ratios similiar to the later Hawk boxes

Thank you for your reply. Does JDM mean a Japanese Import? That would make sense as I assume they run shorter gearing?

I have no idea what you mean by a 'Hawk' box.

I need a peak top speed in sixth gear @ 7,000 rpm of anywhere between 110 to 130 mph as most of my events are on gravel (forest)

I will occasionally be competing on Tarmac events so a top speed of 120 to 130mph would be a good compromise.

Thank your your reply. I assume tat you rally an an Impreza? Tarmac or gravel?

What's your peak top speed in sixth with a 4.4 CWP?

Gearing graph would be handy.

Will the 6 speed gearbox from a Legacy fit an Impreza? I have found one at a decent price, but if it won't fit then I will be using a JDM 5-Speed with 4.44 Diffs. Any suggestions??

the Legacy version isn't identical and is missing the speedo drive for one............
also from memory it has long ratios better suited to drag/top speed rather than rallying

Thank you AS Performance. I think I have worked out that I need a later TY754 gearbox with 4.444 final drive. Possibly TY754VBAAA or TY754VBACA. Do you agree?? Anyone got one???
