Default gearbox / front diff whine

Hi All, first post but here goes....

Im used to driving RWD Nissans, and this is my first impreza (2001 WRX Wagon) as i have another kid on the way and its more practical.

Its STD apart from turbo back 3" stainless exhaust and pipercross panel filter.

I have only had it two days and I am noticing the whine coming from the front box / diff. now i know they make a bit of noise, but im not used to it so i figure id change the oil, cant do it any harm....
Researching on here it looks like is just undo the drain plug, whilst warm. drop it out and replace through dipstick? is this right?

Also, whats the best oil to stick in to make it quiet. Im using it as a daily driver so it does not need race spec oils as its driven on many short runs and not thrashed about too much. i dont want to have to wait till my diffs warm up every time i take it out. Likewise, i wont be thrashing it through the corners and the diffs wont be getting too hot (i hope).

Can anyone recommend what oil, and how much to use?

Cheers.

Hi

You need a 75w-90 for the gearbox and diff*and here are the ones we have.

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-673-75w-...ion-fluid.aspx

If you want to go for the best, the Millers CRX 75w-90 NT, Gulf Competition, Motul Gear 300, Redline MT90 and Millers TRX are ideal for the gearbox. The Castrol Universal, Motul Motylgear and Fuchs Gear Syn are all decent alternatives. The Fuchs Syn 5, Millers CRX, Redline 75w-90 GL5, Motul Gear 300 and Gulf Competition are ideal for the diff. The Fuchs Sintopoid, Castrol Syntrax Longlife, Millers TRX, Motul Motylgear, Mobil SHC and Amsoil FGR are also good choices. You can never be sure what will keep things quiet, although the Redline Shockproof is a well proven option for that, as is the Castrol Universal in Imprezas.

Cheers

Tim

Go for the Castrol Universal 75w-90 and use the code SAVE20 for 20% off that at the moment. You've got the capacities right, but I'm not sure on the procedure, although I think you're right.

Cheers
