Hi guys, what are the symptoms of a failing torque converter (94 wrx).

The car in question doesn't make any funny noises, 1st, 2nd and reverse gear work fine but soon as it hits 3rd it slips really bad.

No fault codes, done a full oil change, even added anti-slip additive but no improvement.

Does seem to suffer a little torque bind on a tight turning circle.

I don't think yours torque converter failing,my suspicion is can be the clutch packs(as 4EAT have planetary gears and where each "gear" has a corresponding friction plate/clutch pack),second thing what is worth to do is have look for Band Adjustment,here is link on this

If this(Band Adjustment) not help,I think you will need rebuild 4EAT,which here in UK unfortunately is not cheap option

Error codes on TCU you can't read without the Subaru Select Monitor(SSM),you can read those codes via cheap OBD cable from eBay and SW

Excuse my ignorance but where is the obd socket on a early classic? I didn't think they had one.

 

Oops I misread yours year

Usually on Impreza is OBD port(in yours case should be OBD-I)is under steering wheel

On some older Impreza still you can find the OBD-I port

I can't see how to do the band adjustment on that first link you posted? it mentions it at the bottom of the pdf so am wondering if it's on the next pages?
