Default RIP, old girl

Well, after 211,112 miles on the clock, all genuine, I've just parked my Scooby up for the last time. MY03 Sti with PPP, only 17 miles on the clock when I collected her back in September 2003.

One of the big ends is on its way out :-(

Nearly nine years of almost trouble-free fun. She doesn't owe me a thing.

Then repay that and get it rebuilt, will cost less with the engine not having let go.

Serious mileage: almost 24,000 miles a year

My classic, which had 4 miles on it when I bought it in September 1998 has not yet done 100,000 miles.

Can't grumble at that for a performance car. Well done - you must have looked after it too. No rebuild? Are you splitting/scraping the old girl? What's next? Not a Civic diesel . . . .

You cant complain at that mileage for a performance car. Must have been well maintained.

I take it you do a lot of motorway miles?

Thanks, guys. Feeling pretty sad today...

£50k on fuel is about right. Plus 9 sets of tyres, one clutch, two sensors, 4 rear struts, one rim and two wheel bearings.

Apart from the brick in the road that took out the rim and eventually the bearings, it grenaded a muntjac deer, got rammed off the road by a BMW who didn't use his mirrors, and rear-ended by a sleeping nurse. It towed heavy trailers and horseboxes for miles. And it got boxed in at 4am on a wet, dark November Sunday morning in a Snowdonian mountain pass by three high-speed pursuit cars.

I'm not going to leap into any decisions - she deserves better. So plan is to get a cheap runabout for now, something better later on, and maybe in a few years I'll get her bottom end fixed and make a track day car out of her?

Always serviced on the dot by a local independent garage I know well. Shell Helix oil to start with, Castrol synthetic in the latter days. And yes, a lot of motorway miles - but a lot in the mountains of Snowdonia and Cumbria too, where she was untouchable.

Only joking. Both mine have been rebuilt at <80k despite FSSH. Well done. Why not just go for the rebuild? In a couple of years time it just won't happen.

LOL! Not a lot I could do when approaching a T junction with one coming from each of the three directions!

They thought I was a burglar from Scouseland in a stolen car, by the way. Given I was off for a weekend playing steam trains out of Porthmadog and all I had in the boot was overalls, a skanky pair of toetectors and a filthy footplate bucket, they got a bit of a surprise.

Why not rebuild now? Money. Need to save it for the new motor... I was going to retire the STi to play use only in 6 months anyway, as the fuel bill was getting silly. This has just brought that forward and added an extra hurdle to the cost of playing :-(

Thing is though the whole car has done 211K, not just the engine. If you rebuild the engine then next the gearbox needs looking at, then the prop/drive shafts, brakes etc. etc. Not to mention I would imagine the biodywork has the odd stonechip etc.

She has served you well, but your money may be better spent elsewhere.
