just bought 95 impreza, mighty fine motor but it's done 96000 miles with fssh, is it ok to thrash it to the red line or will it go boom? how good are the engines for? whats the reasonable mods to do to it and how much should it cost?

its never good to thrash an engine to the red line all the time, no matter what it is.

you say service history, is it complete ? when were all the belts including cam timeing last changed ?

mods?

start by getting it breathing better, better exhaust & possible an induction kit, then get some big brakes

cheers for replying barge, full history apart from one which was about 3500 late fully caught up now if that means much? cam belt done about 5000 miles ago, smokes a bit in first 7-8 minutes of driving but ok after that, very concious of letting engine warm up before going over 3000 revs.

i've been told induction kits are bad for the engines health and my bank balance not to mention the hair line, by the parts geezer at a subaru dealer he recomended a decat and a direct replacement air filter how much bhp for all this and is about say 5-600 quid about right? note the parts geezer was sound the salesman was a wan**er going on about tollerances and stuff, more of a good cop bad cop scenario than anything else.

I'd say the way forward is the full exhaust, and maybe a dawes device to control the boost. AFAIK induction kits are fine on earlier cars, but the phase II (ie My99 on) engines are more sensitive to them.
