RB5 Gearbox Replacement / Repair
3rd gear went in my RB5 earlier today. I have dropped it off to my mates garage for him to remove, but i dont know what is best to do once its off. I dont really want to put a second hand box in if it hasnt been re built because they are getting old now (classic imprezas i mean) so most will be on their last legs (especially as i am running around 340bhp).
The current plan i have is to have my box stripped down by a specialist for 75 quid plus VAT, and then get it re-conditioned. However, i wanted to check on here with people to see if anyone can recommend something else? Is there a *better* box out there i can swap to, or someone on here who can recommend someone?
Cheers

Probably not what you want to hear, but i put a complete 6 speed conversion from a 2004 UK Sti blobeye into my RB5 a few years back, along with auto prop shaft, linkage, STI quickshift etc....by far the best mod iv ever done to the car, but will cost you at least £2000 inc 6 speed box fitted.

Thanks for the suggestions but I'm not wanting to spend that much. I am not looking to pay more than £1000 max (which is what i have been quoted to have mine reconditioned including removal and fitting in the car).
Just wondering if there is a better standard box I can put straight in really? Or slightly stronger internals I can use during the re-con?

You should be looking for a v5/v6 STi (or P1) set-up at a minimum for that level of power. The std. UK/Euro spec box wasn't designed for that sort of power (i broke one at just 250bhp!), so a recon of your box is not a long-term solution....
When you say setup, what do you mean? Could I just fit a v5/v6 box straight into mine, or does it need other changes to make it fit? If so, what sort of work is required?
By 'set-up', i mean the rear diff & rear shafts would also need to be changed, as the STi/P1 box won't work with your RB5 diff/shafts. You would also benefit from the LSD at the rear and the closer gear ratio's in the STi setup....
If you need any help, just drop me an email and i'll get you sorted
