Default Exhaust question please

Ok on my Wrx classic I have a nice 3" system now for the last 2 years I have had no reason to think of it as anything other than a cat back 3" with 4" tailpipe and a gawjus jet sound on boost,

Well yesterday while underneath looking at things for mot failure signs I noticed the system is not bolted together but slides together and is clamped and sprung held, same with the back box, but also the backboxhad a spring and a slider when I moved it inside the bad it opened up and to my extreme enjoyment to note of the exhaust went as deep as a submarine and when I drive it well woooooooooooohooooooooo, but why is this done, it looks like a track exhaust a friend has and his was loads a money,
