Default Newage 5 speed gearbox - how much can it handle?

Right then,

Does or has or is anyone running big power through a Newage 5 speed wrx box?

Is there a limit where they are 'known' to give up? Has anyone had one give up due to power?

Anything would be appreciated folks

Loads of threads on this subject. Have a search. They are not the strongest box.
Some give up for no apparent reason on mildly tuned cars but others (Martyn J) have
run in excess of 500 BHP for a while. 350 is reckoned to be a good rule of thumb max.

Thanks however I've noticed a lot of inconsistency along the lines of how reliable they are. I am talking about Newage and not the classic version. (unless it is the same)

A lot depends on usage some go on for ages some don't. Mines done 123K (Newage)
So it's difficult to say how reliable they are. I would say OK other wouldn't. The 6 speed is recognised as being stronger.

I have always been lead to believe that the 5 speeds generally give up the ghost over around 350bhp but I have read on here of the occasional box lasting with over 400bhp.

I am currently running around 340bhp and 300lb of torque. The thing to remember is that it will be the the higher amount of torque that kills the box quicker than the bhp.

Normally if you're asking the question you need a 6Speed

Just had the conversion with my tuner, there a 3 5speed box the 1st early ones went at 350 odd and made of chocolate hence why they have a bad rep the other are good for 400-500hp or so. The torque and how it driven will be a huge influance which i guess why some let go at 350/400/450 etc

The normal oh you to spend 2k on 6 speed is rubbish from what i hear

Your joking right?
All the 5 speed boxes are weak compared to the 6 speed boxes, even on here standard TY754 boxes (thats 214lbs of torque) have munched their gearsets, (its rare but when you start taking these past 300lbs of torque it gets far more common), so either your "tuner" is winding you up, or they dont know alot about these boxes.
You also have to understand that the biggest upgrade they did from the TY752 to the TY754 box was to strengthen the casing, not the gearset (though MY99/00 STI's had a cryro hardened gearset which really doesnt mean that much or make that much difference).

Very few of these 5 speed boxes last long over 350lbs of torque, even if you are being gentle, even less above 400lbs.

True, i have munched 3 boxes to date on 340lbs so ts either a straight cut box or a 6 speed for me next time

Even at 320/320, the freedom a 6 speed offers you in a classic to 'abuse' 3/4th gear without worrying about going pop is worth £2k all day long ! Gearboxes shouldn't just cope, they should bring added performance IMHO

If you want to stick with a 5 speed then Scooby Clinics gearset is around 2700 quid I think, its better than the PPG one as the PPG one retains the standard 5th gear (which normally break and naff the whole lot up )

yep
already explored all the options, i do like the 5 speed boxes tbh, so i will either do some sweet talking to kev(clinic) or get G R Performance to build me one, either option is going to upset the missis
