Default my99 uk turbo random problem, please help somebody!

hi there
car is a my99 impreza uk turbo 2000
it was faultless before i changed the gearbox, now i have an annoying problem that i can't figure out!
when i start it it runs for 5-10 seconds then quits, if i give it throttle it is very lumpy with spitting back through intake etc. did the diagnostic check and it was 23 for maf sensor/circuit so bought a 2nd hand one and was the same so bought one off here that was guaranteed to be new and unused, still exactly the same. i have checked the wires and there is no break in the loom also. if i disconnect the plug on the maf and start it i can keep it going with a little rev and then when its warm it will idle.
not sure what to try next, any ideas??
hope someone can help!
thanks in advance

Check the wiring back to the ecu, clear the codes.

What about the terminals in the plug? Any sign of water or green corrosion? Did you check the wires for continuity

terminals are good, no signs of water or anything as it hasn't seen rain for a year or so and yeah checked the continuity and got a clean bill of health.
do you know if any other problem will cause that code to come up?

Sorry if this seems like a daft question but did you properly reset the ecu after changing the maf?
