While chatting to the one of the mechanics at my dealer today he was telling me a number of things they had been though at a recent UK STI course. One of the points brought up was the need to use de-ionised water for the intercooler water spray, with tap water to be avoided at all costs.

His phone rang, so did my mobile and we didn't have a chance to finish the conversation, other than 'Pure Water' in the 2002 STI manual refers to de-ionised water.

I remember that stuff, topping up the battery in my Capri (I'm an oldie too). Spraying water onto a hot intercooler will give the same results as pressing the button on a steam iron, and tap water can make a real mess of them.

My understanding is that deionised water is pure, with 'fine' solids removed that are still there in distilled. However, I could be wrong as all I know about water is that it is wet.

Hate to think of my intercooler looking like a kettle element.

I think tap water would block the spray nozzels as well over time, with chalky deposits, it ain't to good for the washer nossels either!

I haven't used any water yet but I am sure prodrive will do a Litre bottle for a tenner LOL = Vat

 

Think its the hard water content. Like the limescale that builds up on bathroom fittings.

Good thing in Singapore, is that the water's "soft"!

 

I wonder would 'Brita' filtered water do the job?

The water from a de-humidifier is the same stuff, so if you have one just save the water from it.
We use de-hums' at work and I must empty 40+ litres down the drain every day...Its about 75p per litre bottle in my local car spares shop,so I must be throwing £30 away every day

Maybe I should start selling it...
How about £1.50 per 5 Litres?

I look after an industrial water softener that makes 200m3 of softened water a day, perhaps I should get a water spray.

Nasty hard water down south

 

Just boil a kettle and pour that in there when its cooled down. That removes the limescale which causes the clogging problem.

 

You can get de-ionised water from halfords and I guesss any other larger car accesory place in 5l bottles.

Don't think using water from the kettle after it has boiled is a good idea - have you ever seen the scum you get in tea made from boiled hard water?

If you want to make it yourself you have to condense steam - personally I can't be bothered though and would have no idea where to get all the glassware (condenser etc.)...
