Friend at work is off to France on saturday, she says she has to have MEDICAL insurance. Last two times I went I didn't bother, thinking that being EU I would be treated.

Any comments?

I think most UK insurance policies cover you for driving in France - some European countries insist on a "Green Card" which an insurance broker can issue for you.

I always get a Green Card for travelling in France as it can be useful to show to the authorities that you have insurance in case of an accident/incident.

AA European cover is also advisable - i.e. get the car back to the UK in the event of breakdown.

Personally I always take some out, it only costs £20 - £25 per person although I think you can get it for less at the post office.

I think you need to have form E111 but I'm not sure, that site will tell you all you need to know.

Thanks Sal, but what I'm realy asking is do you have to have medical insurance, ie will they refuse to treat you in an A+E situation as they might in th USA?

get an E111.. I don't think they will refuse to treat you but you may be charged.. I believe you can get the E111 from the post office and get them stamped there.. I don't think there's a charge.. if there is it's nominal

You just need to go to the post office and collect an E1-11 form. Been there, done that and had the treatment (in France). Had to pay 70 Francs up front though (nearly a tenner )

No the won't refuse you but you may end up paying the medical costs there and then.

“Remember an E111 does not cover you for all the medical costs that you can incur or for repatriation - it is not an alternative to travel insurance. You will still need appropriate insurance to ensure you are fully covered for all eventualities.”
