5th gear crunch

Default 5th gear crunch

hi

i was racing my car at sso a few weeks ago where it got a lot of abuse i done about 10 launches down the strip and many laps of the circut and all was well with car however since then it has started crunching or grinding when going into 5th gear but only at high revs.

I have been told it's the syncro
Is this an easy fix?
Is this an expensive fix?

99 sti v5 type r

probably not synchro but nut loose on main layshaft - can be done insitu for a few hundred - speak to david at Api

Not quite so simple as tightening the big nut. They do come loose and do damage to the gear and the synchro hub outer ring. Sometimes you can be lucky and just tighten the nut - MOST times, you will need either; a new gear, or a new hub, or worst case; both.

But, yes, on a 99 onwards 5 speeder it can be done without taking the box out of the car.

Had this problem on both of my Scoobs, quite a common problem TBH.

Well I have solved the problem by fitting a 2006 uk sti 6 speed
