cylinder head ok to use or not?
hi,ive just got this head back from a garage today and they have said they have tested and skimmed it and said it is ok to use but there are still marks on it,i don't really know what i'm looking at so i was wondering if anyone could tell me if they are ok to use with these marks on.cheers
well i would say that you will lose compression through them cuts as they are quite deep, also as anders wr1 says it wont make a good seal so will probably just ruin the head gasket and you will have to do this all again
ok thanks for the info,these are v5 heads,i was only looking to sell them as i no longer have the car do you have any idea what there worth with this one damaged?this is not a cheap ploy trying to sell them without advertising i'm just looking for some idea of what there worth now.cheers.

i would only sell as spares/repair etc as i wouldn't want to rip anybody off,hence the reason for the post,i was just thinking the cams/other head maybe worth something.thanks for your reply's,i will be looking to get my money back for the test/ skimming if it wasn't worth doing.
i guess someone could use them for cams and valves, are they sti or wrx? becuase if there are wrx the hydraulic lifters are realy hard to get hold of i was looking for weeks for mine even r n golden subaru couldnt get hold of them lol so if someones in need i gave £30 for a set of siezed ones as i know how to free them off, just need to keep an eye out in the wanted threads or ebay them

If the valves and seats have been sorted, it is useable, but it has seen better days...the damage around the valve seats are the issue more so the than the rest of combustion chamber area (Yes it looks bad, but it'll get covered with carbon anyway, so doesn't really matter unless your trying to build a blueprint engine
).
I could be wrong but it looks like the valves are either second hand or not been replaced...they should be (as they often get bent), unless they've already been removed checked and reground (along with the valve seats...although it doesn't look like it).
Anyway, why throw money at this head when you can put that money towards a new head?

Is all that damaged not confined to within the cylinder bore though meaning the head gasket wouldn't even seat where the damage is?

Foreign debris damage, usually a broken piston ring or similar ratting around, as mentioned above.
All it is a few dents; could machine them out and open up the combustion chamber a bit, but what you do to that chamber you'd have to do to the other three to get matching compression - why bother, unless you have LOTs of time on the you hand to faff around with the drill for hours on end.
The valve seatings is the important part (as usually debris gets trapped between the valve and seat; and you can't see that without removeing the valves.

Doubtful; once its coating in carbon (which all combustion chambers do eventually) it be no worse than a normal head.
Still wouldn't use it for anything above stock BHP, but that me being picky
IMHO - It will make a good door stop.
Each one of the jagged edges in the combustion chamber is a potential trigger for causing pre-ignition/detonation - personally i wouldnt use it especially on an STi.

it looks like they have used a screwdriver to part the head from the block then used chisel to remove the carbon and stuck on gasket
