Hi guys my bugeye has started to use oil I have to put in a litre every 3 months or so is this ok or should I be worried

 

i suppose it would have a lot to do with how many miles you would do in those 3months, and how hard its driven.

What Rob said. Driving style and mileage will dictate but keep an eye on it just in case. How's the coolant?

 

Never used a drop of coolent since I've had the car I average in-between 200 - 300 miles a week

 

Is there any evidence of a leak or smoke from the car at all. Get someone to follow behind and sniff for oil.

Sounds like a turbo on the way out or maybe a leak from the engine.

 

It doesnt smoke and I haven't noticed any big oil leaks anywhere

 

Think I better check I little deeper for any leaks

 

As said You have a problem.

They shouldn't use a lot of oil. My old uk car never used a drop of oil between services, even though it had 130K miles on the clock, was running around 330 BHp. And it was abused every trip out in it.

My current car has only used about 500-600ml whilst running in and since then no more than 250ml

Get it checked out

mine has started to do the same altho its every couple of months i have the need to put a liter in but ive had a good look over the car theres no leaks or smoke from the car ill look in to the turbo when i get chance to take the car apart but its not lacking power or functioning any different on the gauges i have !

i also drive around 300 miles a week

 

I remember seeing on here somewhere that a litre for every 1000 miles is within normal tolerances.

 

Have you checked inside the Top Mount?

There should be some in there but not a lot. It may indicate if the turbo is on it's way to the scrappy in the sky if it is dripping with oil.

1 liter per 1000 miles is on the high side but yes, not unheard of. If it's getting through any more than that then you more than likely have an issue though (cracked ringlands, valve seals, etc).

The OP is doing approx 1L / 3500 miles so is a long way off 1L / 1000 miles - it could seep that much out of a tired rocker cover gasket which is a common problem and no indication of a knackered engine so let's not to go scare-mongering just yet.

As previous posters have suggested, get someone to check behind you for any smoke but also give the engine a clean around the rocker covers (particularly the offside one), sump, crank case etc then look out for any leaks.
