Default NA scooby best engine?

cut a long story short, im buying a impreza sport to use as a road rally car as ur not allowed forced induction in night events, so cant use my blob,
the one im looking at the engine has blown (bottom end) now im after as much power as possible out of the 130bhp lump, but is there a better engine to start with that has more hp out of the box and will drop in with ease? say the 2.5 forester NA engine?

if i opt for the 2.0 NA lump, to put back in, or even poss rebuild the engine thats in it, any one know of decent HP figures from a sport that been achived? and the best route to get the power?
i would like to see 150-180 bhp if at all possible.

any info help appreciated
cheers
cj

When we looked into it we were told....

1) Find same age Legacy 2.5

2) Buy engine and ECU

3) Plug and play into your Impreza

More torque and power certainly but you need to free up exhaust and induction which pretty much all you can do on NA imprezas

ah right so its plug and play with is good, looking at specs the legacy is a second quicker to 60, and is 157bhp so as you said, free up the induction, decent system on there, and some other little bits should see me near the 170 mark?

The Impreza Sport's NA 2.0 flat-4 motor is a 160bhp engine too, is it not?

Sorry bud, they were only the same as the normal sports. Sports special was just a 200 run of yellow/black sports with matching interior trim

Nothing different engine wise.

To the o.p., if you get the Leggy engine/ECU sorted, would it be worth adding Borla headers into the exhaust equation. I remember Darren aka SC00BY_MAD had a lovely Impreza sport with them and apart from freeing up the Impreza burble on a sport, it gave him more response/couple more ponies

Classic sport pre 99 was 115ps, post 99 was 125ps, none were more than this power output.
The Impreza R is 160 so that would be your best engine to get but you would need an ecu and wiring loom? then the 2.5, well is that engine allowed for the events your after as most events have a cc limit if its anywhere near professional so that puts the 2.5 out the door.
If you can find a hawk 2ltr R engine/ecu/loom then your laughing(ish)

Tony

na rules regs state that the engine must be 4 cylinder and no forced induction, so the leggy should be fine,

just need to know if its as simple as taking old sport engine out, putting leggy engine in and swapping the ecus over?
