Default Side lights wont turn off??

HI peeps as title my side lights wont turn off on my 2000 UK impreza turbo. Can anyone shed any light on the issue? is it the stalk that is kerput or are there any relays etc invlolved that can be giving me grief? Also is there any way of testing the system to find the problem? bit of a pain as i have to disconnect my battery when I park up at the mo.Many thanks for any pointers on the problem..
