Question

Just fitted a Forge VTA valve to my 99, and taken out for a spin.

I am getting some real weird noise from the bonnet, which seems to be located where the induction kit is. Almost sounds as if something is blowing. Only when I absolutely thrash it ,to around 5500/6000 rpm, do I get the expected whoosh.

Anyone got any ideas? It has got a red spring in it.

Cheers

Matt

Matt,
The red spring is the harder spring and will be quieter than the weaker blue spring.
Speak to forge and they will be able to send you a blue one if noise is what you require.

I have an induction kit (although not K+N) and a forge VTA dump valve on my MY00, and i get strange noise's on "low RPM" gear changes from the induction area.

The noise is a sort of chattery / vibrating air?

Is this the noise you're getting?

I put it down to the induction kit?

Not sure what colour spring i have fitted

Nick.

Nick, yeah it sounds like the same thing - vibrating/blowing air. I too think it is linked to the induction kit, as I know someone who has a VTA on an 01 without an induction kit, and he just gets the whoosh.

On mine unless you are changing gear at 5k rpm or above, there is no whoosh (or at least you can't hear it over the air sound).

I'll be popping into Forge today to see what they think.

Matt,

I can just about hear the whoosh from the DV, but the chatter noise is louder.

You've probably seen the "DV shimming" thread - obviously common to Forge DV's.

Let me know what Forge say?

Cheers,

Nick.

Thumbs up

I've been told that the noise that you are describing is wastegate chatter. I get it on my MY97WRX with a HKS induction kit. I did however start to get overboost after fitting the VTA dump valve, which I have nearly sorted by putting an air restictor in pipe to the boost controller, just trying diferent hole sizes, as I dont want to loose any performance.

Guys just spoken with Forge and they same the same thing - it is wastegate chatter which is audible because of the induction kit.

As far as the whooshing not being very loud, they thought that the red spring might be too strong on my car which is only running just under 1bar of boost.

As I am having the EcuTek performance map next week, I have not taken up there offer to change to a blue spring, but will wait and see what happens when I am boosting higher.

Just to update those that care, have now changed to a blue spring and it sounds much more as was expecting it to. Am still getting some wastegate chatter but not as much as before and only in highre gears (I think).

Also, Forge gave me a couple of spacers to place on the piston, which would effectively create a spring pressure between red and blue - but haven't used these though, although I gues I may do in the future.

Nick - no you can't, but getting the valve off and opening it up takes 10 mins - honest. If I can do it, a blind monkey could

Dave, but surely by taking it off, you don't get the sound you want, which is the idea of having it?! Sorry can't help you with boost controllers.
