Default Diagnosis help please (dreaded unknown noise)

Hi all,

I hope that someone might be able to offer some advice. I know how hard these things are to diagnose without seeing it. If you have any pointers on similar issues or order of things to look at then that'd be great.

My 07 WRX has developed a noise that could either be described as a grinding or possibly a rattling noise. It only happens in 4th and 5th gear in situations where I'm off the throttle completely and then bring in low revs or where I'm at low revs and come of the throttle.

I had thought that the noise was coming from mid-front of the car but I've had the rear seats out today and now I'm more convinced that it's coming from the rear.

Hammering the throttle doesn't cause the noise to occur. I've replaced the oil in the rear diff today and gearbox oil will be next on the list but oil level looks ok so I'm not hopeful of it making any difference.

Suggestions greatly appreciated.

THanks
