Default Whine

Hi there,
I've recently brought a bug eye WRX wagon on a 52 plate and has covered 85k miles.
It has a whine that increases in pitch as the speed increases. The whine is present if you put the gearbox into neutral whilst travelling also.
The noise when I brought it was very quiet and the paperwork on the car stated from subaru that a whine was present but a full gearbox strip would be needed to investigate further. That was 20,000 miles ago. I got a 6 month warranty cover when buying the car but since having the car the noise is getting louder and now the engine management light has come on twice, seems to do it when accerlating hard in 4th gear but then it goes off as soon as you slow down below 30mph.

I've done some internet searching, some people say that their whining is caused by the front axle bearings in the diff others have said bad bearings aswell.

Just wondered if anyone else had come across similar noises. I'm not worried about the management light, my mechanic will have a looky at that when I can get the car to him but I thought its worth asking on the whine before I start spending lots of money.

I suspect that the noise will be the drop gear bearings in the 4wd transfer case. they can be done without taking the box out of the car at a cost of £300.00 + VAT. It is a common problem that we deal with on a regular basis.

The management light is just a coincidence, short of a speedo failure there is nothing connecting the gearbox to the CEL. And the speedo obviously works.

Call me if we can help you.
