Default hmmmmmm, Newbie wanting advice to buy.

LOL, ok, I admit it, I know nothing about Impreza's MK2 Escorts, Yes but Impreza's....NO.
Basically, I am looking to replace my MK4 Golf TDi 150 and have been hankering after an Impreza for a while now. It will need to be my everyday car and my budget should be up to 6.5k.
Ideally I would want an STi but I am torn between the MK1 (Classic) and the MK2 (Bugeye) I much prefer the look of the classic but the idea of buying a 10 year+ old car for a daily driver haunts me. I have also been told to stay clear of imports??????
What I need to know is.....Which would be best for me to buy? I want a standardish car with no stupid mods or blacked out windows etc but don't mind a decent exhaust, maybe a re-map etc.

Many thanks for your patience, Kevin.

that would be blob eye newage sti or classic sti(280bhp) or classic wrx with mods front mount bigger injectors if not 440cc, decat etc remap

your budget would get you a good classic typr R (2door) dccd (control of power bias to rear if wanted)

Thing is, I really want to stay away from buying trouble LOL. (I have that with my MK2) so lightly modded sounds the way to go. Any particular reason to stay away from Imports??

they are old and it just depends if you are lucky classics are raw more driver focused and involved hope you make the right choice for you. just havve to be lucky and take your time to look around there are some very well looked after imprezas out there

Cheers, (Only Pinto's and BD's in a MK2) Don't want to be doing any work as I have no time for spanners LOL. Just buy and drive. Was going to buy another Sierra Cosworth but have been kicked in the wallet with the past 2 I've had LOL.

Just ensure that whatever you buy has full service history, massively important with an Impreza.

I would suggest a not too high mileage bugeye sti which you would find if you look on Pistonheads and enter your budget figure.

Car's like this:

Hi mate, have always been a Blue Oval RS man myself until recently and after numerous expensive models spent more time in bits than on the road I switched to something more sensible like an Impreza LOL.
Nice looking Mk2 mate, I'd love one of them although I still think they are more than acceptable with a nice YB transplant too

With 6.5k to spend and a reliable daily driver in mind, I would personally be looking at a Bug-Eye STi.

Was looking at one like those today at a garage local to me. Seller said it had history but all he had was a service book and a few receipts. To me, History means a folder full of receipts LOL Car had a private plate just removed so new reg number wouldn't check. Mileage was 65k and had 5 owners which put me off slightly. Also, the interior smelt of stale smoke which also puts me off as a non smoker. No stereo in either. Steering wheel was scuffed as well. Couple of pics of the car........

Was slashing it down with rain and the car was boxed in by others so couldn't get any good pics. Will go for another look when dry.

Replace raw with less refined, more driver focused with less stable and involved with in the garage more and you probably have it spot on

I'm not sure but that car looks familiar somehow........, it's the funny light in front of the bright switch on top of the dash and the Jap look LOL

I've got a Bugeye and tend to keep a look out for for anything bugeye...... spidey sense says I'm sure I've seen this car bent /repaired.

All IMHO

I was in the same boat as yourself, when i was looking for my first Scooby.

Took a few months of homework.
I`ve now had it 16 months and it`s never missed a beat.
WRX 280ps which is more than enough for a 40 yo
Just a couple of mods.
2 Owners since imported in 2008 (and 1st one only being the importer).
And still only done just over 83,000 kilometers (just under 52k miles)

I paid a premium for it but you have to if you want the right one

My only advice would be just don`t rush into it.
Oh and dont discount an import

If buying a classic i would rather seek out a nice import than a UK car. MOre than likely had an easier life and the servicing requirements in Japan are regimentally strict. Plus there will be less chassis corrosion.

Another thing, if your coming out of a 150 gttdi then in the real world driving you will be hard pushed to tell the difference with in gear performance, plus you will triple your fuel bill! Generally, standard impreza's arent that quick these days.

I'd be inclined to get a nice Blobeye WRX or an import Bugeye STi - the other option is a Bugeye UK300 - just take your time looking & don't buy the first one, there are plenty of sh1tters out there & decent cars are hard to find. Just be prepared to travel & be disspointed a couple of times.

good luck!

Basically the same principals as when you're buying an RS. I'm in no desperate rush to get one so will see what comes up.
Been slobbering over this one over on the for sale section as I think it looks just right. I would much rather buy from a genuine enthusiast rather than a snotty chav LOL.

Discussed this with my wife last night and she says it's a mid life thing........ (I'm only 43 LOL) and that she'll need to buy a pair of white stiletto's

I think personally id look for a JDM if i was looking. I never had a problem with insurance, or modifications. And generally they seem much higher spec.

Especially with the classics the STI certainly seems a much more potent and capable car than the turbo 2000 out of the box.

Im a sucker for classics, i think if i wanted to go newage id rather budget 8k, i cant imagine 6k will get you a decent blob. Bugeye perhaps as the demand is much less.

Certainly from the looks of it the classic will also retain its value much better, esp if well looked after. Id imagine the bugeye still has a way yet to fall depreciation wise. As someone pointed out the other day, bugeye value has just dropped below classics.

Lots to consider, but certainly a test drive is the best way to go about it. Bear in mind these cars are awesome. The temptation to buy the first car you drive is immense

Good luck and see my PM also

Cheers
Chris

Thought you would be lurking around here somewhere son.

Budget has risen slightly to 10k now so could be looking at a STI PPP. Don't do rocketship mileage so shouldn't really affect me.

Something like this:-

who has told you to stay away from imports? lol , they should have given you reasons too

imports are the best with better power and more options,
I have had 8 import Sti and Wrxs for the past 3, 4 years and they have been great, best cars, original Japanese Made in Japan
