how quick is a 330bhp classic??
uk turbo, with full decat, ported headers and up pipe, vf35 turbo, ecutek remap, im guessing with these all fitted it should be running around the 330bhp mark, so just how fast will it be? and will the gearbox cope ok with this power? and the clutch? will it feel a lot faster than it is just now, only got full decat on it atm. came off a round a bout yesterday behind a bmw x5 who was nailing it and i kept up but i was suprised just how quick it was, i need lots more power!
im in edinburgh up in scotland. yeah the x5 must of been one of the big engined petrols, tbh i wasnt trying to race him or anything just that he was driving like a ****, but off the r/a up to nearly 80 wasnt anything in it, although i didnt put the foot down unitl i was in 3rd and was suprised i wasnt gaining on him. :-( my previous classic was remapped to 270bhp and then my version 3 sti was 280 out the box and was a fair bit faster than my current uk turbo hence why iv started to mod it. i really wanted version 3 or 4 sti type ra in sonic blue but couldnt find a good one anywhere. will just have to carry on modding.

The X5 4.6is E53 (if thats what it was) is quite a power-house out the box, but with those mods you mentioned your classic would comfortably destroy one without too much effort.
The Beamer comes with with about 340bhp and 354lb ft torque, although they weigh over 2 tons so a lot of that muscle goes to waste on moving all that flab.
0-60 in 6.5 seconds and 149mph, midrange they're pretty strong but I'd expect any classic running 240+ to comfortably beat one due to superior power/weight. The X5 at most only has about 156bhp/ton.

the vf35 seems to be the turbo of choice as an upgrade from what i have read on here as well, was looking at a hybrid td04 but they seem to be limited to 300bhp where the vf35 can run more power and still has a quick spool up.
andy forrest mapped my v5 sti to 334bhp an its in a different league to my 290bhp uk classic an it chewed up an spat out honda s2000's etc. V5 has only accounted for a GTR lookalike R33 with a big FMIC so far........
No problems with either gearbox or clutch etc, probably break one tomorow now ive said that!!

UK turbo gearing isnt exactly brill, its quite long and you can find that the power band is quite wide, so you can lose out there, your v3 is quicker due to the shorter gearing, so where as a UK turbo with 330bhp is quick, a v3 STI with the same power will be quicker due to the gearing.

My experience of selling my VF35 to a UK classic owner was....
At 330 bhp,
1. The clutch gave up soon after fitting.
2. It was a bit laggy after a TD04.
3. It was as quick as a 380 bhp New-Age STI

My classic is (proven) quicker than a 460hp hawkeye from 30-130 with me running much less power

I have a WRX (fairly standard engine wise) and a 2003 4.6 IS X5 (347bhp). The V8 really doesnt drive like it weighs the same as a pair of council semi's.
The sports suspension, gearbox, brakes and engine give the feeling of driving a car that is heavier than a mondeo but certainly not as heavy as an SAV. A 330bhp wrx or whatever should tiptoe past in reality though just through being lighter if nothing else.
off the mark the x5 is pretty impressive, same as the subaru, no wheelspin and in manual mode (5 speed) the gearbox just seems to rev out in every gear very quickly, never gone fast enough to test that in 5th though!.
On the move it is best though, pulling from 30-80 or whatever feels reasonably quick but then you are wrapped up in a huge comfy nappa leather sporty seat and the feeling of speed is toned down compared to the wrx. With a 100 litre fuel tank, I wouldnt be trying to out run it either as the fuel consumption isnt much worse than the impreza either, never mind a 330bhp classic.

i knew the box was on the limit so why not run with it till it goes bang and then replace with a 6 speed

it did do a few 1/4 mile runs just all the other time it got taken care of.

darc
& I'm not saying whos car it was!TX.
