What do you think, will the R160 MY99/00 diff take powerwise?
I´m thinking of using the bigger R180 reardiff from a newage STI, but due to misunderstanding when buying the kit from a member on here, it is only the same R160 diff he sold to me, instead of the bespoken R180 big diff! ;(
Now I think about getting a R180 reardiff somewhere and use it with the hubs of the newage STI on my classic WRX MY00.
Is it worth the hassle and will it all fit plug and play with the big diff, the bigger shafts and hubs, oh and the handbrake assembly of course!
Please let me know!

I am running 450bhp with a R160 3.9 rear diff and planning on going over 500bhp with the same setup.

I mostly race the car on the quartermile and track, so it has to take much abuse at the dragstarts, so I´m afraid to brake the rearaxles and diff...that´s why I asked and wanted a fit and forget solution, as far that´s possible!
My car seems to be in the same region powerwise as yours Banny, should have had about 400 and going to run it with a new turbo now a bit under 500bhp hopefully!
Seems as if I should give it a try and see, how long it takes the abuse...

But if I would come around the parts mentioned upwards, are they all I need to make it work?

Why don´t you swap to the bigger diff, Banny?

 

Yes they would be all you need to upgrade to the R180, I guess I am lazy and if it aint broke dont fix it

I did some reseach and found out, that the classic Type R/RAs hubs might fit my needs, because they use the big R180 diff (with different ratio of course), too!
Is this really possible to use the hubs from these cars and the bigger shafts from an newage STI?
Even the 114.3 PCD Hawkeye STIs seem to use the same big axles...

 

05 STI & Hawkeye STI's use larger hubs and bearings, so your rear struts won't fit. They also have a wider rear track, so best avoided for a classic transplant, IMHO.

Sorry I forgot to say, that I´m planing to use the Hawkeye reardiff and shafts from a MY04 STI and the hubs from a classic Type R/RA.
This combo should fit, isn´t it?!

 

as long as classic r/ra is from 1998 onwards i think. v3 type r had only r160. best have a read up.

 

v3 type r has an R180 too.

 

So it has got the big hubs as well, right?!

 

The V3 Type R is a strange one.
It has an R180 diff and the larger hubs but the rear brakes are of the single pot sliding caliper type and are a nightmare to get aftermarket brakes for. If you have to source hubs and back plates anyway I'd get them from a later model.

 

Hmmm, if I use the hubs and my existing 2pot rears, would this be a problem?
I can get the V3 ones quite cheap...
I do have the new backplates from a newage WRX and the 2pots from this car as well, so I do not use the discs from the V3!

 

If you swap the back plates over onto your larger V3 hubs you'll be able to use the later Calipers.
