hi all,
iv just done my six month oil and filter change, now i have been using hallfords own 10w 40 oil for the past year as reccomended by them, anyway iv just droped the old oil and put castrol magnatec 10w 40 in, can somone tell if this is a good or bad oil for my car witch is a 1997 impreza sport, and if it is a bad oil in what way is it a bad oil and will it damage the engine in anyway.

Tony, its a sport so i dont think oil brand is that critical, main thing is hes gone for the correct grade. Why would he wanna spend mega bucks on millers, motul, shell, mobil 1 when hes already said hes been using halfords own.
thank you all for your comments,im nu to all this and i would like to improve with the maintenance ov the the car and to futher my understanding ov just how complex these engines are ,

I would use it...... in a lawnmower!
Use the good stuff for your Subaru: a Proper fully Synth like Silkolene Pro S or Motul or Millers. If you have a look on the Subaru specialists websites, you'll get an idea of what they use and I'd be gobsmacked if any advocated Magnatec.

Subaru dealers probably use what the book states semi synthetic 5W-30.
For a Subaru Sport castrol magnatec is perfect
For a Turbo I would use millers or silkolene 5W 40
If I was doing trackdays I would use Millers 10W 60

10w60 is too thick, a w50 is about as high as you want to go in a standard or slightly modified car, on a full rebuild 500bhp+ monster, yes run a w60 as your temps get it to a nice runny mixture, a w60 is about 50% thicker than a w40 at 100 deg, thats alot of drag on your engine and the oil pump has to work harder.

well, 24k so far, 5 oil changes (everyish 5k) used magantec 10/40 for everyone, not heavily modded but enough, engine good (touches wood/rabbits foot)
Funny how its not recommended yet for every engine failure on here, how many are running the recommended oil and still have failures (for 1 reason or another)

The Magnatec 10w-40 semi synthetic is much like any other well branded 10w-40 semi out there, if a little over priced compared to its competitors.
To the OP on a Impreza Sport it will be just fine with regular changes, certainly better then the Halfords own 10w-40.
If in the future you want to go better then try a 5w-40 synthetic.
Cheers
Guy.

just though id say i use castol fully syth 10w 60 in my and it running 390bhp on a FORGED LUMP and it has been fine and i give it the beans every other day : > i reckon i could use 10w 50 or 15w 50 but im sticking with what i now but these oil thread dont half go on : >
there is a new magnatec out that is fully synthetic (10W40) to tell if if you are getting that, on the label the old semi synth magnatec will have A3/B3 the new version has A3/B4. This is in retail now.
If you want to stay semi synth then look for GTX with the same A3/B4 suffix (A3/B3 GTX is a mineral oil)

Pretty much. To be more specific, 10w-40 for standard or near standard classics, 10w-50 for modded or thrashed ones, 5w-40 for standard up to quite heavily modded new age, 10w-50 for heavily modded or track only new age.
It isn't a true PAO synthetic, it's just like the Magnatec 5w-30 that they label as synthetic, but it's such a low grade synthetic, we describe it as a semi. It's a hydrocracked mineral oil based sythetic and a basic one at that. If it was a top end oil, they would call it Edge.
