Right, i'm after an uprated clutch and flywheel for my 98 v4 sti type r standard 5 speed box with dccd. But after reading a post on snet about someone possibly being sold the wrong clutch for a six speed i would like to know what year range/version impreza clutch/flywheel i could fit to mine without a problem as i have seen a few for sale but now a bit cautious about buying because it may be wrong.

Can fit either 225 or 230 just fitted an exedy and its sweet think the 6 speed clutch is 240mm
if you go for a lightweight flywheel dont go too mad on the weight with going too light

what sort of power you running / aiming for as that makes a difference and is it used everyday or just trackdays and weekends ?

 

I think you don't really wanna go below 7-9kg on the flywheel for everyday road use.

Yeah the 5-sp is a 225 (OEM size) or 230mm. If you get API's modified road-use-friendly Exedy Organic, you'll be guaranteed a pukka quality item that won't break up (like a cheap eBay price-driven special might). Also, I think it's rated to 400bhp/400lb ft., so if you want more power/torque, you'll need to look elsewhere...

Dont buy a pink box exedy, they judder real bad.

Both me and a mate have them bought from different sources and they judder the same.

I'm sure its a material issue.

 

^ Mine doesn't, the lightweight flywheel made my transmission sound like a dumper truck though !

 

i had no problems with the exedy supplied and fitted at API, i also did a flywheel exchange for one of their lighter ones and it improved acceleration. the flywheel was 7kg, i had no issues on my classic. my brother has a 6kg flywheel with his exedy clutch and his judders

 

I think API's come in a white box... whatever that means? lol

Funny how people claim to have judder on an APi clutch on a forum, but almost NEVER call me to talk about it..................

We have recently changed ONE for a slippage, once at a time when fully loaded and in 3rd gear. Never ever swapped one out under warranty before or since.

Bought an Exedy Pink for my classic from Lateral. It says Anti-Judder on the website - and guess what no judders whatsoever! Try it...

 

my exedy supplied by api is awersome. much better and i have a 6kg flywheel. no judder.

suggest you learn to use clutch control properly

 

Thanks for the replies, so a lightened flywheel is a worthwhile addition but i still need to know if any version classic clutch will fit my v4 sti. Ie a V1 into a V4 etc?

The clutch for your car is the 230 mm version. We don't keep the old 225 mm version 'cos the 230 fits straight in place of the old 225 - no mods - nothing, just straight on to the flywheel.

Yes, a flywheel weighing no less than about 6.5 Kg's is fine for every day road use. Much lighter than that can cause problems.
