Normally Subaru's Multi Layer steel gasket is good enough for most applications.

What you need to do to ensure longevity is to be absolutely certain that the head and block surfaces are completely flat. I'd never suggest replacing a knackered head gasket without getting the heads skimmed.

WRC cars don't use gaskets they use gas rings which entails an awful lot of work that is both costly and time consuming.

Get the heads skimmed and go for some Cosworth Stopper gaskets and you'll not go far wrong.

Lateral Performance.
The OE HG may be very capable but I've been quoted £300 for a pair at a stealer
Is this right or is there another source for them at a much lower price?
A Cosworth HG set is about £135.

Cosworth, Cometic... or, I think, the STi v.5/6 ones are MLS ones too. Whatever you get, you shouldn't have to pay too much more than £110-120 for the pair.

BTW, I believe the correct thickness for the MY99/00 engine is 0.6mm (thin ones!). But don't quote me...

That sounds more sensible.

Being had, I'd say! Ridiculous mark up!

As mentioned, worst case they should cost £130 max, I reckon....

Yea £300 is well overpriced, the Uk retail for a pair of Subaru Gaskets from a dealer is £117.24 inc vat... Are you sure they weren't quoting you for a kit including all the nessesary other gaskets and bits n bobs you need?
