BBC Sport - Football - Premier League ponders play-offs for Champions League

The likes of Bob Paisley & Brian Clough would be turning in their graves. The European Cup / Champions' League should still be for League Champions and the reigning European Cup holders only. I don't see why 7th place should potentially get you in to that competition.

Of course the current 4 teams will only continue to get CL qualification if the Premier League keeps up their recent excellent record in that competition, but that is already showing signs of fading with Liverpool already out and our best players leaving our shores, so it might drop to 3 anyway.

I imagine that Rafa Benitez thinks it's a great idea though!

 

They changed the rules for Liverpool last time. Looks like they want to do the same again.

Better include 7-10 as well then to let them in next year

 

They could rename the CL: how about "The Mid-Table Mediocrity League" or maybe even the "Europa League"?

 

Do REAL fans, (and by that, I mean people who go support their home town club, not plastic mancs etc), actually have ANY interest in the so-called "Champions" League, any more?

I know my interest in it was killed when they started letting in teams that either weren't champions, or hadn't won it the year previous.

 

This one's dead in the water.

How many more hair-brained schemes will certain chairmen in the PL think up next? We've already had the 39th game, Old Firm > PL, 2-division PL etc, etc and now this one and they have all come to nowt.
