Default Exedy Organic Clutch

Hi, My 2002 wrx is going to need a clutch soon. I have seen these on ebay @ £149 are they a decent buy? I am not going to be running massive power, Just exhaust, filter and a remap.

SUBARU IMPREZA TURBO UK & IMPORT EXEDY ORGANIC CLUTCH on eBay (end time 01-Nov-09 21:36:17 GMT)

I have also seen what looks to be the same clutch on ebay at about £300, I dont know what the difference is if any?

Thanks, Andrew

Cheap fake copies. Buy from a recognised shop Prosport stockport or API ect not off e-bay you will otherwise regret it . I got the pink boxed exeedy upgraded one with new flywheel fitted for £820 to my 2002 sti .

These are not copies, I got mine from them (Uprated stage 1) was a genuine part - even checked out with exedy UK as one of the main UK distributors (suppling mosty to trade).

Thanks for that. So this would be ok for my car then. I dont want anything thats going to be too hard etc as my mrs uses the car more than me. Would this be an upgrade over the original or with the power I will be running would I be better of with an original Subaru clutch.
Thanks, Andrew

The one in that link is the standard clutch you need the pink box version to be uprated, if you really want a daily drive car stick with OEM spec (e.g the excedy you have linked to). This should be fine for the mods you are running.

Make sure you get the flywheel checked out and skimmed if needed.

We'll I'd avoid that.

I stupidly bought on of those for my 05STI.
It lasted maybe 2 or 3 months before the pressure plate started giving bother.
Place that supplied it - said yeah yeah, your power/torque - no problem
Car is remapped to 330/340 by Andy Forrest

When it came time to honour guarantees etc, they then said parts only, no labour blah blah.

Its still in the car now about 15 months on, still bites, is not slipping, but bite point is very high.

Avoid it like the plague.

I've spoken to Alan at Engine Tuner recently and he has said that he no longer supplies Exedy because there has recently been so many problems with failures, not sure the full ins and outs of it i.e. what exactly is failing but apparently Exedy are burying their head in the sand and not acknowleging theres a problem.

Yopu won't hear a bad word about the APi uprated Exedy that we sell. We have standard STi version or Uprated STi version for 5 speed cars. Many buyers on here use and recommend them.

We just had a small group buy a few weeks back and all are delighted with the clutch and the service. Go check it out then call me.

Hi David, i wasn't trying to offend, hope you didn't pick it up that way, it was just as i had asked Alan about a clutch for my friends car and he to had initially recomended Exedy but then after he went and looked into it and spoke to his supplier got back to me saying that his supplier had advised against him supplying Exedy at the moment as there had been problems recently.

I take it you havn't heard the same stories?

Heres the Email just to confirm it:

Hi David

I've done a bit more research, and was told explicitly by my usual supplier not to use Exedy! apparently, they've had so many complaints about the uprated versions, they are no longer selling them.
We could supply a Helix, but they start at £475 plus vat.

Regards Alan

I had asked if it was through cheap 'copy' Exedy's being sold but he couldn't tell me much more.

No offence taken at all. It's just that I was making the point that our Exedy is sourced by us from Japan and bears no resemblance to the cheap crappy ones that are appearing from China or somewhere.

Exedy UK do not know us. We have never bought a single clutch from them.

I do know that they are worried about the ' imports ' as the packaging and products look so similar.

My point was that ours either in standard form or APi uprated form continue to behave and not cause any concern to those that buy them.

Good Luck all David APi
