I bought the car 2 weeks ago and it has a big brake upgrade on the front. Not sure exactly what, I think it has bells and rotors, and it has 4 pot calipers.

The discs look very big, the calipers have an extension bracket bolted on to allow them to fit over the discs, would these be 330mm discs?

The current discs are worn and warped. They need replacing. My car is a 97 classic turbo. I want to fit new standard discs and pads. My question is as follows, can I just remove the bells and rotors (are these just adapters) and fit a new disc and remove the bracket from the calipers?

What size discs and pads will I need? Its a 97 so i think 277mm are standard, 294mm is std from 98 onwards I think? Is 294mm the size disc I need and will the 4 pots just go straight over these?

 

Are they the brakes that have Subaru on them?
If so you may have the Godspeed conversion kit, as you mentioned the bracket.
The kits are fairly expensive, so you could make some money back if you go ack to 4 pots.
But you need to confirm what they are really, pictures would be ideal. You are right 4 pots are not standard on your car.

 

I've just done a google search and yes, i think it is the godspeed or equivalent upgrade. The brackets and spacers look the same so I think they are 335mm discs on there at the minute.

Can I just go back to standard from these, where is best for replacement discs? If they're not too expensive I suppose I could buy new 335mm discs and new pads for the 4 pots?

For std vented oem discs and pads I think its £90 all in which would be better than what I have now being that the discs are cirrently knackered, am I looking at £200+ for new 335mm discs and new pads?

 

The 4 pots would have been split and a spacer (not the extra bracket) put in to widen the gap to accept the thicker discs. If you were to go back to the 294's then you would have to remove the spacers from the calipers.

 

Would it be an easy job to remove the spacers from the calipers? If so, I think thats what I'll do.

 

It involves splitting the caliper in two, by removing the bolts that hold it all together... I would imagine you need to get hold of some original caliper bolts too as you will have longer ones in there now to account for the spacer!

Easy enough if your a competent mechanic... a vice will help no end though!

 

If you want them standard so much, you'll probably be better off swapping them for a set of regular 4 pots. There should be plenty of takers.

 

Totally agree with Joey_Turbo...

Sell yours as a complete set, then pick up some 2nd hand 4pots!

You might even make some money in the process??

Thanks for the info guys. I've sourced a set of standard 294mm discs, grooved\vented with decent pads and std 4 pot bolts for £170 del. I think this is the way to go, to replace the discs and pads on the upgrade I have now is nearly £400 which I can;t afford at the minute. I supose the only other option si to have the current set of discs skimmed?

 

Godspeed will skim them for you
