hi.

got a subaru impreza turbo wagon year 97/98 done high miles of 153000, still going strong like 60k! it seems to have a clutch judder upon pull away slow or fast ,hot or cold, you have to give it slightly more revs before pulling away or its juddery ,difficult to explain really, anyone have any ideas please, i think its the flywheel at fault? seems to change gear ok etc, just driving it like it all the time drives me mad.

Give it a full bore start to give the clutch a 'skim'. I think thats what the advice will be, but wait on the more knowledgeable owners to concur!

i just had to replace a clutch kit on a pug 307 diesel with exactly the same problems,after looking at the frictional surface of the pressure plate, clearly there were high spots,the clutch plate itself was ok,and the flywheel too.either way ypur gearbox will need to be taken out and have a close look at the flywheel and pressure plate frictional surfaces for highspots,they are obvious as they look like clean oval spots and the rest of the surface will have a uniform wear markings.

If you are going to take it apart change it anyway. At that mileage will almost certainly be goosed (or close to) and a standard Exedy is only about £120. Budget another £30 for a flywheel skim just in case.

a worn flywheel will look like a worn brake disc,there will be lips on on the edges of the flywheel,if not it's ok,but if there are lips, a skim can be done at a local engineering workshop for cheap,and even if there are high spots evident on the flywheel still get it skimmed,it will be like new afterwards.on the clutch side,if i had the gbox out i would replace it anyway,as they are not too expensive.

 

Is that the orginal clutch? I thought I was doing well on my MY97/98 at 99000 miles. If so you must have a scoobynet record there! Is the car running standard power?
Mine judders a bit too, I think it is was quite common on our model year. No doubt a new clutch would help though.

 

My clutch used to judder a fair bit and in the end started slipping. They do say that a juddering clutch does NOT mean its on its way out but I can say that when I did replace the clutch the judder also went away.

I bought an excedy one off ebay came with friction disk, cover, and new release bearing.

Budget a full day to do it if you haven't done one on an Impreza before. I did the gearbox off(backwards) method - others do engine out (or forwards).

Most will say skim the flywheel and it is advised but I think you need new flywheel bolts if you take that off.

 

Oh God, take the engine out. 7 hours at a steady pace on your tod with a simple engine hoist and lots of coffee breaks. Gearbox out is too dangerous by yourself or without garage ramps and tranny jack. Have changed two boxes and they are bloody heavy. Don't believe the people who say they can do it in 2 hours either.....
