Secondly, sound's like a problem my mate used to have in his classic wrx, i think it may be the spark leads need changing, as when they need changing the car often misfires off the launch and its normal after about 4000 rpm.
My mate had the similar problem and he got his spark plugs and leads changed, and all was well.
When was your car last serviced if you know?

it has got brand new leads on it and they are good ones too
tried cleaning the maf today but it is a brand new unit so it is fine
been told it could be the coil pack on the top of the engine
