Well that place is normally for a black plastic retainer that holds that panel in place. Could it be that a previous owner has installed an alarm/immobiliser and it's a sensor for that? Is it an infrared-looking sensor, lol?

Did the classic WRX have a factory alarm?
Looks like factory wiring with a proper connector. It does look like an infared sort of thingy.
Tracking device?

Could be. Might be a thermostatic wotsit for when the heaters are on auto.

I thought the heater/aircon sensor was that little vent thing on the heater control panel (and the surround trim) itself.

It's to do with the heaters/air con when on auto I believe, as is the little vent mentioned.

Nowt to do with an alarm.

mike h, you're correct!

That thing IS some kind of sensor - mine's the same. I always just assumed it was panel retaining thing, so was never ever curious to investigate it, lol...

I presume, as has been mentioned, that it's to do with the aircon(?) as, AFAIK, my car's not fitted with a factory alarm/imm.

Hoot! Yeah, I didn't realise that at first - although it was 'only' a matter of weeks for me.
