After shattering my old standard 5 speed bugeye wrx box i have been saving up for a new box and was originally going down the 6 speed newage sti route, but over the last few days i have been reading different posts and having second thoughts.

I have now been told that a ty754vn6aa is one of the strongest 5 speed boxes and would be capable of handling 400 bhp. Is this correct?

Second reason is ive been told that a 6 speed box is a good 2-3 times heavier than a 5 speed?

Finally, and obviously the 6 speed boxes are currently rare as rocking horse s**t and are so expensive.

Your help would be much appreciated. Im hoping to get the car on the strip at POD this year so need to get moving.

No idea where your spec is as I can't see my scooby, but anyway I ran 450bhp/380ft lb on a TY754 box fairly happily, although my guess was it was probably marginal at that, plus I'm not a drag fiend or traffic light GP meister.

Have a 6 speed dccd now though - which is not 2-3 times heavier - the Ty754 is something 40 to50 kg lighter so about 60% of the weight of a 6 speed.

Ive been told to avoid DCCD if i dont already have it fitted as the work involved in setting it up is a pain? WHat are the advantages of DCCD?

So the TY754 will do the job, as i may give this a go for this year and see what happens? DId you do any track days or 1/4 mile runs with yours?

Im running 400/390ftlbs on a Version 6 Type R box, has had plenty of hard launches and is still spot on, only time will tell though

 

Not expensive, if you ask a dealer for a brand new one with all the trimmings it comes to over £6000.

Obviously a brand new one from the dealer is going to be that sort of money.....

When i first started to look there were a few 6 speed set ups going for £1600ish on here, probably a bit less by the time someone had done a deal but now i cant find anything that is less than £2k as stated above.

ANyways, cost isnt the question as im up to about £2k now for a box, but i have done some recent researchand some people have mentioned that this 5 speed box will do the trick and will be better as the gears are longer.

Aparently the 6 speed ratios are very short between changes??

Also, i have read in this section that DCCD is a pain to fit therefore wish to avoid a DCCD box. BUT..... Could i use a DCCD box and not plumb the DCCD controller in, would it still work ok???

£1800-£2K+ is the norm for the box plus linkage alone. wiring/ rear diff if needed are extra.Fitting extra.
5 speed ratios are longer - both top out at about 165mph /7500 but there is one extra gear change in the 6 speeder unless it's a later Forester Sti box - rare and v expensive.

can fit unplumbed - just runs fully open - 65R 35F normally. Mine spends 95% of it's time open, just trun up the locking a bit if its wet and greasy ( with 450bhp)

If my memory serves me well, then I had a standard WRX 2006 of the type you asked about in the top. According to Subaru it SHOULD be able to take 400 BHP but but but, I blew my 3rd. gear with someone like 375 BHP. So I would say it is all about the way you shift, if you go on tracks you are likely to be more hard on the gearbox as you tend to shift faster and release the clutch quicker while accellerating as much as you can.

So the 6 speed is the way forward. I did this recently and I am SO HAPPY with the shift. I got a 2005 STI WITH DCCD and purchased a DCCD-controller in Canada (DCCDPro.com) This is a very easy fit as all you have to do is provide it with power and run two wires down to the gearbox.

You can for sure run it not-hooked-up as it will be running in open-mode. I did a four day training on Nurburgring with mine not hooked up, and I had no problems at all.

 

Mine didn't stand up too long with 340/340 before it stripped second gear completely on the road. Did some launching too though.

Its a straight cut synchro box in a P1 housing.

im looking £2000 plus a gearbox in return. preferably an ra box or something smilar.

Would prob need to swap rear diffs too but im ok with that.
