Hi,

I've just installed a set of Hella HID driving lamps in my P1. I'm using the original P1 wiring with relay to run these. Problem is they work great individually but when I plug both in together they blow my front 'foglamp' fuse behind the coin holder. It has blown a 20amp fuse so far and am a little hesitant to try a 30amp fuse. What can I do about it? Did the P1 with HID's have uprated wiring to cope with HID surge during ignition?

I have similar: Hella HID 1000FF's fitted in place of the foglamps.
They came with a loom containing a 30 amp fuse.
Try it and see. If it DOES blow that, then suspect a fault on the lights, or ballasts.

Or you could use the EXISTING wiring simply to select whether they do come on with main beam. They MUST go off with dips, it's a legal requirement. (I have done that, so I don't always flash the HID's when I flash my headlights) Then make up and fit a seperate loom wiring them directly from the battery via a relay and a 30 amp fuse, or a 30 amp fused relay. Probably better as the OE Scoob wiring is a bit on the thin side for those sorts of currents.

On a slightly different topic, where did you mount the ballasts? I haven't found an obvious place for them to live yet...

30 amp fuse did the trick. Now i have lights literally brighter than the sun!

 

I removed the front upper grille and zip tied them, with two each, to the two uprights at either end of the grille space, inside, between that upright and the rad. One zip tie goes right round the upright, the other through a hole in it to avoid slippage.
They have been there 6 years with no ill effect. I did phone Hella to ask if they were particularly heat sensitive, but they said no, but to avoid a wet area.

Some people put them under the headlights, literally underneath.
