Default Turbo Dynamics GT4088R turbo or FP red turbo?

Hi
Which one would you choose and why?

The car is fully supported for both these turbos.

Cheers

To get the GT4088 to fit you will need to remove the brake servo. Ultimately the question should be what is your power goal, as one is a 700bhp turbo and the other a 500 + bhp.

Dannytwo - 2 very different turbos, requiring very different set ups! As above, what is your target?

Banny - We've installed larger turbos than a GT40 with the servo still in place, why have you had to remove it?

Ok say like i choose the GT40!
Whats the spool up like?
When will it kick in?

What would be required to make this turbo fit/work!

and how would this turbo compare to the FP red?

Target is around the 600 mark
Cheers

GT4088r will be the better turbo in terms of sppol and power but it will cost an absolute fortune more in parts and fitting compared to the fp red

My friend who owns an Evo has been saying there seems to have been quite a few failures on the FP turbo's on the Evo forums lately.
Don't know if they're the same for the Impreza....

twin scroll headers, twin up pipe, 2 external wastegates and I'm sure they are a different downpipe as compared to normal garrets ??? Fitting will be more of a problem than a normal garret AFAIK. Cheapest I have seen the pipes is £1k and they were 2nd hand, a new set of pipes will set you back a lot more. Unless your fitting it yourself I reckon close to £4k for that turbo up and running ???

Blimmey did'nt think it would cost that much! might stick with the FP red.

What price do the GT40s go for normally?

Groupes does a complete kit for just under $4000 then add shipping which won't be cheap and duty, then you will need fitting. Looks like it will be hard to even get one fitted for £4k

is it a 4088 or a 4088R?

The 4088R is the ball bearing version and will cost you around £1500 for the turbo alone. Then you'll also need the following.
Twin Scroll Sump
Twin Scroll Headers
Twin Scroll Rotated Up Pipe with custom wastegate take offs
Custom Rotated Down Pipe (V-band)

You'll probably also need to adapt the front cross member to allow for the rotated twin scroll up pipe.

Inshort its a bloody big job and complete overkill for 600bhp.

My advise if you want 600bhp is to go for a more conventional rotated setup.
and either a GT35R or a GT3542.

Will work out an awful lot cheaper!!!

Danny,

GT35 will see you closish to that power, great turbo too.

I had a FP Gren on my Evo, great turbo, good spool up etc, i know a few of my mates now that have gone to the FP Red and like it very much, BUT there seems to have been a few failures of late, wouldn,t put me off though.

But if i was in your position i,d maybe go GT35...

Duncan,

None of your Greens 'killed themselves'

Your first one failed after you had lost 2L's of oil when out on track at Donno. I rebuilt it for you. It then failed again after the oil feed pipe to the turbo broke while on the dyno. You then replaced it with the new Green HTA turbo, which also failed after you lambda sensor collapased and went through the turbine wheel.

For the record, we have had in total 4 FP turbo failures. 3 of them on Duncans car.

I hadnt mentioned the HTA issue.

The pipe failed because it had been bent and weakened at fitting time but was ages before the turbo failed.

The previous oil loss was after the dipstick was pushed by from excessive crank case pressure.

Yes it's very impressive given it's only running a Power FC & maf sim. Credit goes to Zen for build and mapping.

I would say getting back to the thread topic that given what the FP and MD turbos are producing as standard position turbos is very impressive. I had a MD321T on a 2.0 previously and that made one hell of a road car. Rotated is only needed now for 550+ it seems.

321's won't get you to 600-650, nor will any bolt on turbo.

For that power you are going rotated set up, along with a strong bottom end.
