Default Advice please, gear box oil seal leak ty752vbcaa v4 STI

Hi,

On my way home the other night and I got the lovely smell of oil inside the car, it went away after a few mins, it was a lovely pungent smell, gear box oil.

Since I was not to far from home, I carried on driving, there was no bang or change in the way the car drove and no warning lights came on.

When I got home it was late, so I parked the car up and took a look the next day, I found that that was oil on the drive and after crawling under the car it was coming from between the bell housing and then engine there was even a drip on the fly wheel.

After calling up and asking one garage and it being over the holiday period, they said they would need to get back to me which is fine, I thought I would call a few other places, I have been getting mixed replies.

Some are saying if there is a leak, you are best, getting a recon box or buying a second hand and others are saying its a straight forward job, remove the gear box and change the seal.

Anyone else, had this issue or can give me any advice as the price from one extreme to another is an awful lot.

Many thanks in advance.

cheers for the reply 172sport,
so its more of a time taking task then anything else then, once the box is of the car, its splitting of the case, then changing the seal along with other seals along the way.

I have never opened a Subaru box up before, anyone got any links to or can give a description of how this is done.

Many thanks for any assistance
